About Maria:

Maria Sharapova, internationally recognized tennis star, was born in Russia and moved after the Chernynobal nuclear meltdown irradiated the region. Maria and her father moved to Florida so she could attend Nick Bolleteri Tennis Academy. Sharapova turned professional in 2001 but played just one tournament that year. The following year, the 14 year-old Sharapova became the youngest female to reach the final of the junior Australian Open. She went on to win Wimbledon and on Aug. 22, 2005 became the first Russian female tennis start to have a No. 1 world ranking.
